Greusslich Contemporary ist hocherfreut die über alles interessante Soloausstellung der französischen konzeptuellen Künstlerin Joséphine Kaeppelin anzukündigen.

Kaeppelin zeigt Arbeiten, die den Moment des „STOP“ oder des „OFF“ als Ausgangspunkt für die Gestaltung von Form, Bildern, Gedanken und Bedeutung haben. In Zeiten der Omnipräsenz von neuen Technologien und Geräten, richtet sie einen kritischen Blick auf Technologie und Arbeitspraktiken. Sie lädt den Betrachter ein, eine Pause zu machen, um über die Funktionsweise der Systeme nachzudenken.

Für die Arbeit Appuyer sur pause erstellt Kaeppelin ein Protokoll für die Erstellung eines Druckes auf eine 9m lange Leinwand, bei der zwei Notstops während der Produktion angewiesen werden. Das Ergebnis ist eine visuelle Übersetzung von „STOP“. Dabei reflektiert die Arbeit die europäische postindustrielle Situation und die temporäre Abschaltung der Stahlindustrie in Florange (Moselle, Fr) in 2011.

Zwei andere Arbeiten behandeln abgeschaltete Bildschirme bzw die Geste, eine Maschine abzuschalten. Mattscheiben aus schwarzen CorianÒ Platten können als inaktive, vom Informationsfluss isolierte Bildschirme gelesen werden. Eingravierte Diagramme und Texte thematisieren den Willen einer Person gegenüber der Maschine. Es sind Versuche, fehlendes kritisches Verhalten bezüglich fortlaufenden TV Nachrichten oder Unterhaltung aufzuzeigen.

Joséphine Kaeppelin´s künstlerischer Ansatz basiert im generellen auf den Gebrauch von Maschinen. Diese Geräte sind gleichzeitig Produktionsmittel, Coautoren und Nährboden für Gedanken. In der Fortschreibung von Benutzung und Gestikulation, konzentriert sie die Aufmerksamkeit auf die menschliche Präsenz innerhalb eines von Technologie dominierten Produktionssystems. Unter Verwendung von vordefinierten Formaten, Standards und Grundeinstellungen experimentiert sie mit der Möglichkeit der Wiederaneignung während der Benutzung.

Tatsächlich kann der Einsatz von Software oder Maschinen in einer konträren Richtung oder einem zweckentfremdender Weise als Akt des Widerstandes gesehen werden, durch den ein Raum für freie Gedanken in einem definiertem System geschaffen wird. Kaeppelin hintergeht ein Programm, um dessen Struktur zu zeigen. Sie möchte die Aufmerksamkeit bezüglich einer Aktion schärfen, auf den Willen der Menschen während der Benutzung eines Systems stärken und ebenso auf eine Art der Selbstrealisierung in einem Arbeitskontext ermöglichen.

Dazu ein Brainstorming von Filip Machac: „Was passiert, wenn wir unsere Smartphones, Computer, Fernseher und Maschinen in Produktionsbetrieben ausschalten? Ist die Ideologie des Fortschritts und der Produktion nur eine Idee oder muss der Mensch generell produzieren, um sich vor der unerträglichen Leichtigkeit des Lebens zu schützen?

Man muss die Ideologie kritisch betrachten und das ist in dem Moment des Ausschaltens möglich. In diesem Moment liegt die Freiheit der Reflexion und der De-Chiffrierung unserer ideologischen Träume. Die Spannung zwischen An/Aus ist eventuell die wichtigste existenzielle Erfahrung, mit der man die heutigen sozialen Strukturen und gleichzeitig auch die eigenen Verhaltensmuster verstehen kann. Wenn man die Strukturen begreift, spürt man, dass etwas passieren muss. „Something must happen“!“

Joséphine Kaeppelin (geboren 1985 in Lyon, France lebt und arbeitet in Straßburg) hat mit dem Diplom in Textildesign an der Hochschule für Textildesign in Lyon und für Bildende Kunst an der Hochschule für Kunst in Straßburg 2011 abgeschlossen. Kaeppelin erhielt mehrere Stipendien und Unterstützungen in Frankreich und Deutschland. Sie hat den folgenden Ausstellungen teilgenommen: CRAC Alsace in Altkirch, biennial of Mulhouse 012, Le Magasin CNAC in Grenoble, MBDTCurators in Nantes und CEAAC in Strasbourg; Gedok e.V. in Stuttgart, Greusslich Contemporary Berlin und Akbank Art Center in Istanbul; POPPOSITIONS Off-Fair und im artist run-space Greylight Projects in Brüssel.

Joséphine Kaeppelin “Something must happen”

Greusslich Contemporary is delighted to announce a highly intriguing solo show of the French conceptual artist Joséphine Kaeppelin.

Kaeppelin displays works which point out the moment of “STOP” or the “OFF” as a means to produce forms, pictures, thoughts and meanings. In these times of the omnipresence of new technologies and devices, she directs a critical eye towards the use and work practices of technology. She invites visitors to make a “pause” in order to think about the way such systems work.

For the work Appuyer sur pause Kaeppelin sets up a protocol for a black digital print on 9 meter fabric by requesting two emergency stops during the production. The outcome is a visual translation of “STOP”. It echoes the European post-industrial situation and the temporary shutdown of the steel industry in Florange (Moselle, Fr) in 2011.

Two other works examine the gesture of turning off a machine as well as the aesthetics of a blank screen. Displays made of black CorianÒ panels can be read as turned off TV screens, isolated from the information flow. Diagrams and texts engraved on those black screens examine the will of a human being over the machine. These are ways to show lack of critical behavior we have in front of continuous TV news or entertainment.

Joséphine Kaeppelin´s art works are initially based on the use of machines. These devices are at the same time means of production, co-authors and food for thought. By putting forward use and gestures, she focuses attention on human presence within a production system dominated by technology. By using pre-defined formats, standards and default settings, she experiments with the likelihood of re-appropriation by usage.

Indeed, using software or machines in an opposite way or diverting a program from its purpose can be understood as an act of resistance, a way to create a space for free thought in a defined system. Kaeppelin bypasses a program in order to show the structure behind the system. She would like to sharpen attention in relation to an action, strengthen the will of a human user interacting with a system and to likewise enable a kind of self-realization within the context of work and production.

On that thought, some brainstorming from Filip Machac: "What happens when we shut off our smartphones, computers, televisions, and machines in businesses and factories? Is the ideology of progress and production only an idea, or must humanity generally produce in order to protect itself from the "unbearable lightness of being"?

One must critically observe ideology, and this is possible in the moment of shutting off. In his moment exists the freedom of reflection and the deciphering of our ideological dreams. The tension between on/off is possibly the most important existential experience in which one can understand simultaneously current social structures as well as one´s own pattern of behavior. If one grasps the structures, one feels that "Something must happen!"

Joséphine Kaeppelin (born in 1985 in Lyon -France lives and works in Strasbourg) was awarded a diploma in textile design by the Lyon High School of Fine Arts and a diploma in fine arts by the Strasbourg High School of Arts, in 2011. Kaeppelin received several stipends and grands from France and Germany. She took part in several exhibitions in France (CRAC Alsace in Altkirch, biennial of Mulhouse 012, Le Magasin CNAC in Grenoble, MBDTCurators in Nantes and CEAAC in Strasbourg), in Germany (Gedok e.V. in Stuttgart, Greusslich Contemporary Berlin) and Akbank Art Center in Istanbul. POPPOSITIONS Off-Fair and the artist run-space Greylight Projects in Brussels also showed her work.

Greusslich Contemporary se complace en anunciar la exposición individual más interesante de la artista conceptual francesa Joséphine Kaeppelin.

Kaeppelin muestra obras que señalan el momento de “STOP” o del “OFF” como medio para producir formas, imágenes, pensamientos y significados. En tiempos de la omnipresencia de las nuevas tecnologías y dispositivos, aborda una mirada crítica al uso de la tecnología y del trabajo. Ella invita al espectador a hacer una "pausa" para pensar en la forma del funcionamiento de los sistemas.

Para el trabajo Appuyer sur pause Kaeppelin establece un protocolo para crear una impresión digital en negro sobre un lienzo de 9 metros mediante la solicitud de dos paradas de emergencia durante la producción. El resultado es una traducción visual de "STOP". Se hace eco de las situaciones post-industriales europeas y del cierre temporal de la industria del acero en Florange (Moselle, Fr) en el 2011.

Otras dos obras tratan con pantallas desconectadas, respectivamente, con el gesto de apagar la máquina. Que están hechas de paneles negros de CorianÒ que pueden ser asimilados como pantallas apagadas de televisión, aisladas del flujo de la información.

Los diagramas y textos grabados en esas pantallas en negro, como por ejemplo tematizan la voluntad de una persona contra una máquina. Estas son maneras de demostrar la falta de comportamiento crítico que tenemos frente de continuas noticias de televisión o de entretenimiento.

El enfoque artístico de Joséphine Kaeppelin se basa principalmente en el uso de máquinas. Estos dispositivos son también medios de producción, co-autores y alimentos para los pensamientos. Al proponer el uso y gestos, ella centra la atención en la presencia humana dentro de un sistema de producción dominado por la tecnología. Mediante el uso de formatos predefinidos, normas y ajustes predeterminados, experimenta con la posibilidad de re-apropiación por el uso.

De hecho, el uso de software o equipo en una dirección o de manera contraria al propósito del programa, puede ser visto como un acto de resistencia a través del cual se crea un espacio para el pensamiento libre en un sistema definido. Kaeppelin pasa por un programa con el fin de mostrar su estructura. Queriendo aumentar la atención de la conciencia en relación con una acción, fortalecer la voluntad de las personas durante el uso de un sistema y también permitir una especie de auto-realización en un contexto profesional.

Para ello una lluvia de ideas por Filip Machac: "¿Qué sucede cuando apagamos nuestros teléfonos inteligentes, computadoras, televisores y equipos de trabajo? Es la ideología del progreso y la producción sólo una idea o una persona, por lo general debe el hombre producir, para que así pueda protegerse de la insoportable facilidad de la vida?

Se debe considerar la ideología crítica y es allí, cuando es posible la desconexión. En este momento, se encuentra la libertad de la reflexión y del de-cifrado de nuestros sueños ideológicos. La tensión entre on/off es la experiencia existencial más importante en la que uno puede comprender las estructuras sociales contemporáneas y también la propia conducta. Cuando se entienden las estructuras, se puede sentir que algo tiene que suceder. ¡„Something must happen“! (¡"Algo debe suceder"! )”

Joséphine Kaeppelin (nacido en 1985 en Lyon, Francia. Vive y trabaja en Estrasburgo) Le fue concedido un diploma en diseño textil por la Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de Lyon y un diploma en Bellas Artes por la Escuela Superior de Artes de Estrasburgo, en el 2011 Kaeppelin recibió varios estipendios y grands por Francia y Alemania. Ha participado en varias exposiciones en Francia (CRAC Alsace en Altkirch, biennial de Mulhouse 012, Le Magasin CNAC ien Grenoble, MBDTCurators en Nantes y CEAAC en Strasbourg, en Alemania (Gedok e.V. en Stuttgart, Greusslich Contemporary en Berlin) y Akbank Art Center en Estambul. Feria de POPPOSITIONS-off y en artist run-space Greylight Projects, Bruselas también mostró su trabajo.
