Die Ausstellung der türkischen Künstlerin bildet den Auftakt der Reihe „Solo für…“, die künftig jährlich Künstlerinnen und Künstler präsentiert, die am Anfang ihrer internationalen Karriere, in Ausstellungen der ifa-Galerien vertreten waren. Die Reihe verweist so auf die kontinuierliche Künstlerförderung durch die ifa-Galerie Berlin seit 1991.
Arbeiten von Gülsün Karamustafa waren bereits 1994 in der Ausstellung „Iskele“ und 1999 in „stills, cuts & fragments“ in den ifa-Galerien in Berlin und Stuttgart zu sehen. Heute gehört sie zu den wichtigsten Stimmen der türkischen Kunstszene – sie thematisiert Stereotypen der Weiblichkeit und hat gleichzeitig stets das kulturelle Erbe der Türkei im Blick.
Gülsün Karamustafa gestaltet eine raumgreifende Installation mit dem Titel „Etiquette“. Sie greift darin das Bild einer Tischgesellschaft Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts auf und kombiniert es mit Bild- und Textanweisungen aus einer Benimmfibel, die 1923 in der Türkei veröffentlicht wurde. In diesem historisch anmutenden Salon werden zum einen gesellschaftliche Konditionierungen festgeschrieben, zum anderen geschlechtsspezifische Rollen eingeübt.
Gülsün Karamustafa (1946 in Ankara geboren, lebt in Istanbul) setzt sich in „Etiquette“ auf subtile Weise mit einem ihrer zentralen Themen auseinander: Sie reflektiert die – nicht nur weibliche – Identitätsfindung in einer Gesellschaft, die westliche Lebensstile punktuell adaptiert, ablehnt oder modifiziert. Sie hinterfragt Kulturtransfers, kulturelle Differenzen und noch immer wirksame Orientalismen.

This exhibition by the Turkish artist opens the new series “Solo for …”, which will once a year present artists who have showcased at the ifa galleries at the beginning of their international careers. The series thus highlights the continuous promotion of artists by the ifa gallery Berlin since 1991.
Gülsün Karamustafa´s works have been presented as early as 1994 in the exhibition “Iskele” and in 1999 in “stills, cuts & fragments” at the ifa galleries in Berlin and Stuttgart. Today she ranks among the most important voices of the Turkish art scene – she examines stereotypes of femininity, at the same time always reflecting on Turkey’s cultural heritage.
Gülsün Karamustafa will create an expansive installation entitled “Etiquette”. She draws on the image of a social event around a dining table in the early 20th century, combining it with visual and textual instructions taken from a book on etiquette, which was published in Turkey in 1923. This salon with its historical appearance establishes social conditioning and rehearses gender-specific roles. In “Etiquette”, Gülsün Karamustafa (born in Ankara in 1946, lives in Istanbul) subtly examines one of her central issues: she reflects upon the – not only female – formation of identity in a society that selectively adopts, rejects or modifies Western lifestyles. She questions cultural transfers, differences und Orientalisms that are still potent.
