THE SPACE BETWEEN US befasst sich mit transkulturellen und transkontinentalen Verstrickungen Afrikas, die bis nach Deutschland reichen. Im Zentrum stehen künstlerische Positionen, die an theoretische Diskurse zu afrikanischer Kunst anknüpfen wollen. Die gezeigten Arbeiten stellen die Beziehungen zwischen afrikanischer und deutsch-afrikanischer Kunst zur Diskussion und markieren die oft wenig sichtbare Präsenz transafrikanischer Kultur in Berlin.
Das Projekt nutzt dabei verschiedene Ausstellungsformate: Die Präsentation von fotografischen Reproduktionen auf Werbegroßflächen im öffentlichen Raum und von experimentellen Positionen in der ifa-Galerie werden ergänzt durch einen Leseraum, einen Musikworkshop, ein Filmprogramm, Stadtspaziergänge und dialogische Führungen.
Die Vielfalt und gleichzeitige Verbundenheit der Formate spiegelt die transafrikanisch-deutsche Beziehung wider. Sie nimmt ebenso Bezug auf Begegnungsorte wie die städtische Umgebung und den Ausstellungsraum, Club und Kino, auf Denk- und Sprachräume.

Zum Projekt erscheint eine Publikation im Kerber Verlag Bielefeld.

Die ifa-Galerie Berlin präsentiert während der Ausstellung einen Leseraum mit Schriften, Sachbüchern, Zeitschriften, Romanen, Gedichtbänden, Comics etc.. Dieser lädt ein zur Auseinandersetzung mit dem transafrikanischen Kulturschaffen, mit Programmen deutscher Verlage, die sich der Übersetzung afrikanischer Autoren verschrieben haben, mit Publikationen der ifa-Galerien und mit afrikanischer und afro-deutscher Geschichte und Gegenwart mit Bezug zu Berlin und Stuttgart.

Kuratorin der Ausstellung ist Marie-Hélène Gutberlet.

Das Filmprogramm findet 18.-20.10.13 im Kino Arsenal und vom 21.-24.10.13 in der ifa-Galerie Berlin statt.
Es werden Filme von Brigitta Kuster, Thengiwe Nkosi, Nana Oforiatta-Ayim, Penny Siopis u.a. gezeigt.
Durch das Programm führen Cara Snyman, Kulturschaffende, Johannesburg und Marie-Hélène Gutberlet.

THE SPACE BETWEEN US engages with the transcultural and transcontinental relations of Africa extending all the way to Germany. The exhibition focuses on artistic positions that connect with theoretical discourses on African art. The presented works put the relations between African and German-African art up for discussion and mark the trans-African presences in Berlin, which, although having existed for a long time, are barely visible.
The project makes use of various exhibition formats: the display of photographic reproductions on large-scale advertising panels in the public space and the presentation of experimental positions at the ifa Gallery are complemented by a reading room, a musical workshop, a film programme, city excursions and dialogical guided tours.
The variety of formats – and their interconnections– mirror trans-African-German relations. This variety relates to public meeting spaces like the urban environment as well as to the exhibition space, club and cinema, to spaces for thinking and speaking.

The project will accompanied by an exhibition catalogue published with Kerber Verlag Bielefeld.

The ifa Gallery Berlin will host a reading room with writings, fictional and nonfictional works, magazines, poetry books, comics, etc., inviting the visitors to explore trans-African cultural production, the programmes of German publishing houses dedicated to translating authors from the continent, publications by the ifa Galleries, and everything that can be found with reference to the locations of Berlin and Stuttgart relating to African and Afro-German history and present.
