„Lass schwingen und springen“ lautet eine Zeile aus dem Saaremaa-Walzer, einem estnischen Volkslied. Für die Künstlerin Liina Siib steht die Halbinsel Saaremaa als ehemalige sowjetische Grenzregion symbolisch für die Erfahrung des Totalitarismus in ihrer Heimat Estland. In der Ausstellungsreihe „Solo für...“ zeigt die ifa-Galerie Foto- und Videoarbeiten von Liina Siib, die sich mit gesellschaftlichen Verhältnissen und historischen Veränderungen auseinandersetzen.

„Solo für …“ präsentiert Künstlerinnen und Künstler, die bereits am Beginn ihrer internationalen Karrieren in den ifa-Galerien ausgestellt haben. Liina Siib war bereits 1999 in der ifa-Ausstellung „Passagen – Kunst aus Estland“ in Berlin vertreten. 2011 gestaltete sie den estnischen Beitrag auf der 54. Biennale in Venedig.

Die ifa-Galerie Berlin zeigt Werke der Künstlerin, die während ihrer Stipendienaufenthalte u.a. in New York, Italien, Schweden und Deutschland entstanden sind. Das fotografische Beobachten beim Flanieren erlaubt Liina Siib, interkulturelle Zusammenhänge, oft mit subtiler Ironie, zu hinterfragen. Im Fokus der gezeigten Arbeiten steht der Begriff der Konformität. Sie beleuchten Prozesse von Identitätsfindung und gesellschaftlicher Anpassung, das Spannungsfeld von Wahrheit und Unwahrheit, Arbeit und Freizeit – immer mit Blick auf die Sowjetzeit und ihre Nachwehen in Estland.

Lass schwingen und springen! / Spin around and twirl

Berlin, 3 April 2014 – Spin around and twirl is a line borrowed from the lyrics of the Estonian folk song, Saaremaa Waltz. For the artist Liina Siib the island of Saaremaa, a former Soviet border area, symbolises the experiences of totalitarianism in her homeland Estonia. In the exhibition series “Solo for…” the ifa gallery Berlin presents Liina Siib´s photo and video works, in which she examines social conditions and historical changes.

“Solo for …” shows works of artists who had already been presented in the ifa galleries at the beginning of their international careers. Liina Siib participated in the ifa exhibition Passages – Art in Estonia in 1999 in Berlin. She represented Estonia at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011.

The ifa gallery Berlin presents works created during the artist’s residencies and fellowships in New York, Italy, Sweden and Germany, etc. Her approach of photographic observation in the process of a flânerie enables Liina Siib to analyse cross-cultural connections, often with subtle irony. The exhibited artworks focus on the concept of conformity. They highlight processes of self-discovery und social conformance, the tensions between truth and untruth, work and leisure time – always with an eye on the Soviet era and its aftermath in Estonia.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue about 120 pages with numerous illustrations, available for 14,-€.
