In der Ausstellung zeigt Büyüktaşcıyan ihre neuesten Arbeiten, in denen sie mit poetischen Mitteln die Bedeutung von Migration, kulturellem Erbe, Zugehörigkeit und Vertreibung untersucht. Inspiriert wurde das Projekt von einem Bodenmosaik im Berliner Pergamonmuseum, dem sogenannten Mosaik mit Alexandersittich (160–150 v. Chr.), das aus dem alten Palast von Pergamon (heute Bergama in der Türkei) stammt. Während Herkunft und Besitz antiker Kunstwerke und von Artefakten aus kolonialen Kontexten derzeit in akademischen und Museumskreisen viel diskutiert werden – was auch den politischen Hintergrund für das Projekt bildet – fasst Büyüktaşcıyan diese Fragen weiter und nimmt uns mit auf eine Reise durch verschiedene Zeiten und Räume, in welche sie universelle Gefühle und Erfahrungen wie Verlust, Identität und Geschichte einbezieht.

Der Titel der Ausstellung bezieht sich auf ein Stadtviertel, das an die Ausgrabungsstätte in Pergamon angrenzt. Einige Häuser wurden hier auf einer Brücke gebaut und erwecken den Eindruck, als schwebten sie zwischen Himmel und Erde – wie ein Vogel auf einem Baum. Das Vogelmotiv findet sich in Gestalt des Alexandersittichs in mehreren der gezeigten Werke. Er wird Zeuge des Wandels der ehemals mächtigen und prunkvollen Stadt zu einem dicht bevölkerten urbanen Zentrum, in dem sich auch heute Spuren dieser Vergangenheit finden lassen. Der Vogel nimmt eine Zeit und einen Raum des Dazwischen ein, einen Grenzbereich, weder am Boden noch am Himmel, weder im Heute noch im Gestern.

In einer eigens für die Ausstellung entstandenen Videoarbeit, mit Skulpturen und Mixed Media Installationen vermittelt uns Büyüktaşcıyan ein nicht-lineares Verständnis von Zeit und Raum. Neither on the Ground, nor in the Sky ist Ausgangspunkt einer Reise durch die Geschichte, die uns letztlich in unsere unruhige Gegenwart führt.

Die Ausstellung ist Teil des transdisziplinären Forschungs- und Ausstellungsprogramms Untie to Tie (2017–2020) der ifa-Galerie Berlin, das die kolonialen Vermächtnisse in zeitgenössischen Gesellschaften untersucht und mit Fragen von Bewegung, Migration und Umwelt über mentale und territoriale koloniale Grenzen hinweg denkt.

Hera Büyüktaşçıyan (*1984 in Istanbul) lebt und arbeitet in Istanbul und Athen. In ihren Arbeiten beschäftigt sie sich mit Identität, Gedächtnis, Geschichte, Zeit und Raum. Sie greift dabei häufig auf die Metaphorik lokaler Mythen zurück sowie auf historische und ikonografische Elemente der verschiedenen Regionen, um Ungesagtes zur Sprache zu bringen. Ein in ihrem Werk immer wiederkehrendes Motiv ist Wasser.

Nat Muller lebt und arbeitet als freie Kuratorin und Autorin in Birmingham und Amsterdam. Sie publizierte umfangreich zur Kunst im Nahen Osten. Nat Muller wurde zur Kuratorin des dänischen Pavillons auf der 58. Biennale in Venedig ernannt. Sie ist derzeit Doktorandin an der Birmingham City University mit einem Stipendium des Arts & Humanities Research Council.

The exhibition comprises newly commissioned works that poetically explore what migration, cultural heritage, belonging and displacement mean. The project is inspired by a floor mosaic in Berlin´s Pergamon Museum known as the Alexandrine Parakeet Mosaic (160–150 BC) that was taken from the ancient Palace of Pergamon (now Bergama in Turkey). While the provenance and ownership of antiquities and colonial artefacts is currently debated extensively in academia and museum circles – this forms the political backdrop to the project – Büyüktaşcıyan broadens these notions and takes us on a journey that traverses time and place by touching on universal sensibilities such as loss, identity, and history.

The exhibition title alludes to the neighbourhood adjacent to the Pergamon excavation site, where some of the houses are built on a bridge, thus appearing to be suspended between earth and sky, like a bird perched on a tree. The figure of the Alexandrine parakeet is a motif that resonates throughout the works. It bears witness to change and the way in which this once powerful and glorious city has now been transformed into a populous urban centre, which still retains traces of its past. In this respect, the bird occupies a time and space that is liminal space, neither on the ground, nor in the sky, neither in the past nor in the present.

Through video, sculptures and mixed media installations Büyüktaşcıyan offers us in Neither on the Ground, nor in the Sky a temporality that is non-linear, a place that is liminal, and allows us to travel through history while turning us to our unruly present.

Neither on the Ground, nor in the Sky is part of ifa Gallery Berlin´s research and exhibition programme Untie to Tie (2017–2020) that reflects on the mental and territorial colonial legacies in contemporary societies and their impact on movement, migration and environment.

Hera Büyüktaşcıyan (b. 1984 Istanbul) lives and works in Istanbul and Athens. Her practice explores issues of identity, memory, history, time and space. She often draws on metaphors from local myths and on historic and iconographic elements of various geographies to tell the untold. Water is a recurring theme in her oeuvre.

Nat Muller is an independent curator and writer based between Birmingham and Amsterdam. She has written extensively on art from the Middle East. Nat Muller has been appointed curator of the Danish Pavilion for the 58th Venice Biennale. She is an AHRC-funded PhD researcher at Birmingham City University.
