By means of a series of portraits of 11 Latin women who emigrated to Madrid and Berlin between 1977 and 2004, the installation focuses on the ability of these women to adapt to and integrate into a new social, economic and cultural context. The portraits were taken with a “bird perspective” over a bed that represents leisure time: time to read a book, to write a letter, to rest or sleep. Every person in the portraits defines and determines her own specific representation while the space of rest and recreation is the same for each of them. Inserted between the images, there are quotations from a conversation with a description of the “15 square meters” where a group of women lives in downtown Madrid, Spain. When reading these sentences, the words form images that reconstruct a ´real space`, not visible in the video, and define, in a situation of emigration and rootlessness, the women’s power to manage their own territory defined by a precarious financial, social and emotional situation.
