Joël Andrianomearisoa begibt sich für die Ausstellung in der ifa-Galerie Berlin auf die Spuren seiner Erinnerungen und lässt sich von dem Wiegenlied inspirieren, das ihm seine Großmutter vor dem Schlafengehen vorgesungen hat, Iny Hono Izy Ravorombazaha [Der weiße Vogel]. Die Worte sind vielleicht vergessen, aber der Körper erinnert sich an den Rhythmus und die Schwingungen. Andrianomearisoa nutzt diese Zwischenräume, um sie mit neu erdachten Liedtexten zu füllen.
MEASURES LULLABIES AND WHISPERS ist eine Einladung, den Rhythmus von Schlafliedern und die Kraft der Erinnerung zu erkunden. Die beruhigenden Melodien, die von einer Generation an die nächste weitergegeben werden, erinnern an die tief verwurzelte Verbindung und das Gefühl von Zugehörigkeit. Das Wesen von Schlafliedern, von den Gefühlen der Intimität, die sie hervorrufen, bis hin zu ihrer heilenden Kraft, ist Andrianomearisoas Ausgangspunkt für seine poetischen Erkundungen in dieser ortsspezifischen Installation.
Andrianomearisoas Umgang mit Poesie und Architektur ermöglicht ganz neue Wege, indem er eine neue architektonische Aufteilung im Ausstellungsraum schafft. Die Besucher:innen werden von Worten auf einer monumentalen Wand empfangen, die an das Wiegenlied seiner Kindheit erinnern und hinter dem sich ein neuer geschützter Raum auftut.
Andrianomearisoa setzt seine poetische Erkundung mit Textilien fort, die mit einer traditionellen madagassischen Technik bestickt wurden. Die Arbeit MANIFESTE D’UNE RUPTURE, für die er mit Handwerker:innen aus seiner Heimatstadt Antananarivo zusammengearbeitet hat, erweitert die technischen Grenzen traditioneller Stickerei durch die Verwendung von Raphia, einer für Madagaskar typischen Palmfaser. Der chromatische Minimalismus, die Verwendung ähnlicher Farbtöne, macht das Lesen der gestickten Worte dabei fast unmöglich. Althergebrachte Gesten werden hier zu Formen des Geschichtenerzählens.
Der eindringliche Rhythmus des Wiegenliedes lockt die Besucher:innen in den hinteren Teil des Raumes, wo erstmals eine eigens für die Ausstellung in Auftrag gegebener Film zu sehen ist. Der Film wurde ausschließlich in Antananarivo gedreht und stellt den Beginn einer neuen künstlerischen Praxis im Werk Andrianomearisoas dar. PLEASE SING ME MY SONG BEFORE YOU GO verwebt Prozesse des Schreibens auf Materialien und Architektur in einer Bildsprache, die den räumlich-zeitlichen Rahmen des Erzählens zum Verschwimmen bringt. Der Film wird bei der Eröffnung am 6. Juni 2024 uraufgeführt.
Die Ausstellung wurde kuratiert von Meriem Berrada und Alya Sebti und ist Teil des transdisziplinären Projekts Untie to Tie der ifa-Galerie Berlin, das 2017 als Ausstellungs- und Forschungsplattform zu kolonialen Strukturen in zeitgenössischen Gesellschaften ins Leben gerufen wurde.
Joël Andrianomearisoa geboren 1977 in Antananarivo, Madagaskar, lebt und arbeitet in Paris, Antananarivo und Magnat-l’Étrange. 2019 vertrat Andrianomearisoa Madagaskar erstmalig auf der 58. Biennale in Venedig. Seine Arbeiten wurden international ausgestellt, unter anderem im Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden, Marrakesch (2022), Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2021), MAXXI, Rom (2018), Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2010), Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Washington DC (2015) und im Centre Pompidou, Paris (2005).

For his first solo exhibition in Germany, Joël Andrianomearisoa writes on the trails of his memory. He draws inspiration from a lullaby his grandmother sang to him before bedtime. Iny Hono Izy Ravorombazaha, the white bird. With time, words may be forgotten, but the body remembers the lullaby’s rhythms and vibrations. Andrianomearisoa uses these intervening spaces to imagine new lyrics for his story at ifa Gallery Berlin.
MEASURES LULLABIES AND WHISPERS is an invitation to explore the rhythm of lullabies and the power of memory. The soothing melodies passed on from one generation to another act as a reminder of a deep-rooted sense of connection and belonging. The essence of lullabies, from the feelings of intimacy they evoke to the healing power they hold, is the starting point for Andrianomearisoa’s poetic exploration in this site-specific installation.
For this exhibition, Joël Andrianomearisoa offers an alternative spatial rhythm by creating a new pathway through the gallery. Visitors are welcomed by letters, reminiscent of his childhood lullaby, carried by a monumental wall that disrupts the space. Andrianomearisoa’s use of poetry and architecture creates a new journey—what may seem obvious is far more complex and ambiguous in this new space, hidden behind the wall. Beyond languages, visitors get lost in the meanderings of an abyssal black paper installation, emblematic of his practice. Echoing the LABYRINTH OF PASSIONS presented at the Venice Biennale in 2019, the installation is both dense and fragile and contaminates the space, resonating with the ambivalence of the melody.
Andrianomearisoa continues his poetic exploration with a traditional Malagasy technique of embroidering fabric. MANIFESTE D’UNE RUPTURE, which he created together with artisans from his hometown of Antananarivo, pushes the technical limits of embroidery by integrating raffia, a plant fiber emblematic of Madagascar. In this minimalist chromatism, almost tone on tone, reading the embroidered words is almost impossible. Ancestral gestures become forms of storytelling.
The hauntingly beautiful rhythm of the lullaby, soundtrack of the exhibition, draws visitors towards the back of the room, unveiling an unprecedented video installation. The film, shot entirely in Antananarivo, inaugurates a new artistic practice for Andrianomearisoa. PLEASE SING ME MY SONG BEFORE YOU GO weaves processes of writing, on material, text, and architecture in an imagery that blurs the spatio-temporal framework of narrative. The movie will premiere at the opening on June 6th, 2024.
This exhibition, curated by Meriem Berrada and Alya Sebti, is part of the Untie to Tie platform at ifa Gallery Berlin.
