Für den Künstler Dolanbay ist der Akt des Malens performativ. Durch den repetitiven Prozess des Tropfen der Linien, verwandeln sich seine Leinwände in räumliche Oberflächen mit Tiefe und Texturen, die die Dichotomie von negativem und positivem Raum zusammenführen.
“Eine Persona ohne Identität, ohne Konzept oder Idee, als Rohmaterial, reduziert zu einem Akt in einem Modus der Performativität. Eine fortwährende Bewegung von Linien wird nacheinander auf der Leinwand freigesetzt. Dieser Akt ist nicht konditioniert, er ist sowohl differenziert als auch repetitiv und findet als kontinuierliche Bewegung statt. Unabhängig von Zeit und Raum erzeugt er simultan nach und nach über die Dauer seine eigene Präsenz. Innerhalb des Kontinuums ihrer eigenen Präsenz behält jede der Linien ihre Einzigartigkeit, auch wenn sie sich zu einer Einheit und zu einer inneren Totalität verdichten. Das Tropfen der Linien auf der Leinwand ist als stiller Widerstandsakt gegenüber der Welt der performacy zu begreifen.” (Dolanbay, 2024)
Die stillen Klänge, die sich im Grenzraum der Gemälde verbergen, werden in der Klanginstallation der Komponistinnen Elo Masing enthüllt, die als Antwort auf Dolanbays Werk entstanden ist. Initiiert als partizipatorischer Akt werden diese Klangräume während der Ausstellung Negating Blank II: Performacy auch in Zusammenarbeit mit anderen experimentellen Musiker:innen in einer Reihe von Dauerklangperformances erforscht.

Biografien

Dolanbay hat in Großbritannien 3D-Design und Mixed Media Fine Art studiert. Mit einem dreifachen Fokus auf Künstler, Kunst und Leben hat er Kunsttheorien und kohärente Praktiken untersucht, die auf die historischen Veränderungen zurückzuführen sind, die die zeitgenössische Kunst prägen. Dadurch hat er eine Reihe von Gemälden und performativen Installationen geschaffen, die eine neue Ästhetik entwickelt haben, die die Dichotomie von Performativität und Konstativität, Aktualität und Potenzialität sowie Akt und Handeln in einem Modus der Performativität negiert.

Elo Masing ist eine estnische Komponistin/Improvisatorin/Klangkünstlerin, die derzeit in Berlin lebt und deren Praxis zwischen experimenteller Komposition, improvisierter Performance und performativer Installation angesiedelt ist. Ihre Musik wurde international von renommierten Solisten und Ensembles aufgeführt und ist auf zahlreichen Labels erschienen. In 2015 graduierte sie an der Royal Academy of Music, London, über „Die Körperlichkeit des Instrumentalspiels in der Kammermusik“.

Negating Blank II: Performacy

Malerei als Performance
Eine Persona ohne Identität, ohne Konzept oder Idee, als Rohmaterial, reduziert zu einem Akt in einem Modus der Performativität. Eine fortwährende Bewegung von Linien wird nacheinander auf der Leinwand freigesetzt. Unabhängig von Zeit und Raum erzeugt er simultan nach und nach über die Dauer seine eigene Präsenz. Innerhalb des Kontinuums ihrer eigenen Präsenz behält jede der Linien ihre Einzigartigkeit, auch wenn sie sich zu einer Einheit und zu einer inneren Totalität verdichten. Die Leinwand verwandelt sich in eine räumliche Oberfläche mit Tiefe und Texturen, die die Dichotomie von negativem und positivem Raum zusammenführt.

Das Tropfen der Linien auf der Leinwand ist als stiller Widerstandsakt gegenüber der Welt der performacy zu begreifen. Jede der hingetropften Linien steht im Gegensatz zum Gewöhnlichen und jedes Gemälde entsteht durch Repetition. Die Oberflächen ähneln einem einzigartig klingenden Instrument, als ob stille Klänge im Grenzraum verborgen wären. Der innere Raum wartet darauf, entfaltet zu werden, und die Klänge der Linien warten darauf, in einem partizipatorischen Akt enthüllt zu werden.

Sound is immanence in the paintings in silence…
Ein subtiler Klang bewegt den Raum. Er entsteht aus der Stille und verklingt in die Stille. Manchmal bauen sich Klangschichten zu einem sanften Crescendo auf, um dann fast wieder in die Unhörbarkeit zu versinken. Eine klingende, nachhallende, bewegte Stille… Wie zitternde und tanzende Staubkörner im Lichtstrahl der Sonne…

Die Klangarbeiten, die Negating Blank II begleiten, stimmen sich auf den gemeinsamen performativen Unterbau der Malerei und der Klangkunst ein. Sie sind durchdrungen von der Sinneserfahrung der Musiker*innen, die durch die Betrachtung der Bilder entstanden ist. Sie entfalten die zeitlich und räumlich komprimierten Schichten der Gemälde in ein zeitbasiertes Medium. Die Musiker *innen lassen die in den Schichten verborgenen Klänge in Erscheinung treten und gleichzeitig reagieren sie auf die Ausstellungssituation als Ganzes. Die Klangarbeiten werden sowohl in Zusammenarbeit mit live Musiker*innen als auch mittels aufgenommener Klänge verwirklicht.

For the artist Dolanbay, the act of painting is performative. Through the repetitive process of dripping lines, his canvases are transformed into spatial surfaces with depths and textures that resolve the dichotomy of negative and positive space. "A persona without identity, with no concept or idea, as raw material, reduced into an act in a mode of performativity. A perpetual movement of lines are released, one after another, upon the canvas. The act is not conditioned, it is both differentiated and repetitive, occurring as movement in continuity. Indifferent to the actual time and space, it flows in simultaneity and gradually generates its own presence through longevity. Within the continuum of its own presence, each of the lines retains their singularity, even while together they accumulate into unity and towards an inward totality. The dripping of the lines on a canvas is a silent resilient act in response to the world of performacy." (Dolanbay 2024)
The silent sounds hidden in the liminal space of the paintings are revealed in the ongoing sound installation by composer Elo Masing, created in response to Dolanbay’s work. Initiated as a participatory act, the sound spaces will also be explored by her in collaboration with experimental musicians in a series of durational performances during the exhibition Negating Blank II: Performacy.

Artist Biographies

Dolanbay has studied 3D Design and Mixed Media Fine Art in the UK. Via a three-fold focus on artists, art and life, he has been investigating art theories and coherent practices consecutive of the historical changes that shape contemporary art. Consequently, he has produced series of paintings and performative installations evolving a new aesthetics, negating the dichotomy of Performativity & Constativity, Actuality & Potentiality and Act & Acting within the mode of performative art doing.

Elo Masing is a composer/free improviser/sound artist of Estonian origin, currently based in Berlin, Germany, whose practice is situated between experimental composition, improvised performance, and performative installation work. Her music has been performed internationally by renowned soloists and ensembles and has been published on several labels. In 2015, she was awarded a PhD from the Royal Academy of Music, London, where she explored the physicality of instrumental performance in chamber music.

Negating Blank II: Performacy

Painting as performance

A persona without identity, with no concept or idea, as raw material, reduced into an act in a mode of performativity. A perpetual movement of lines are released, one after another, upon the canvas. The act is not conditioned, it is both differentiated and repetitive, occurring as movement in continuity. Indifferent to the actual time and space, it flows in simultaneity and gradually generates its own presence through longevity. Within the continuum of its own presence, each of the lines retains their singularity, even while together they accumulate into unity and towards an inward totality. The canvas transforms into a spatial surface with depth and textures, which consubstantiates the dichotomy of negative and positive spaces.

The dripping of the lines on a canvas is a silent resilient act in response to the world of performacy. Each of the dripping lines are opposing generality and each painting occurs through repetition. The surfaces resemble a unique sounding instrument, as if silent sounds were concealed in liminal space. The inner space is waiting to be unfolded and the sounds of the lines are waiting to be revealed in a participatory act.

Sound is immanence in the paintings in silence…

A subtle sound vibrates the space, emerging from and fading back into silence, at times accumulating into a gentle layered crescendo, then falling back into near inaudibility…. A sounding, resonating, vibrating silence… Like particles of dust quivering and dancing in the light of a sunbeam…

The sound works accompanying Negating Blank II are sensitive to the shared performative underpinnings of painting and sound art doing. Imbued with the musicians’ experience of the artworks, they expand the compressed temporal and spatial layers of the paintings into time-based media, revealing the sounds latent in these and responding to the exhibition context as a whole. The works will be realised in collaboration with live musicians as well as by means of recorded media.
