In FACING NORTH KOREA zeigt Bernhard Draz konzeptuelle Malerei zur Bildsprache nordkoreanischer Propaganda als System aus Ideologie, affektiver Bindung und bildpolitischer Überwältigung. Im Zentrum steht EMPATHIC PROPAGANDA, eine Serie großformatiger Aneignungen der originalen Propagandaästhetik, in denen Draz heroische Figuren durch sein Selbstporträt ersetzt und martialische Parolen durch regimeentlarvende Zitate überschreibt. Mit DAUGHTERS OF THE SUN richtet er den Blick zugleich auf die neue weibliche Sichtbarkeit im inneren Machtzirkel Kim Jong-uns und auf die ambivalente Feminisierung dynastischer Herrschaft.

In FACING NORTH KOREA, Bernhard Draz presents conceptual painting that examines the visual language of North Korean propaganda as a system of ideology, affective attachment and the overpowering force of images. At the centre of the exhibition is EMPATHIC PROPAGANDA, a series of large-format appropriations of the original propaganda aesthetic, in which Draz replaces heroic figures with his own self-portrait and overwrites martial slogans with quotations that expose the logic of the regime. With DAUGHTERS OF THE SUN, he also turns his attention to the new visibility of women within Kim Jong-un’s inner circle and to the ambivalent feminisation of dynastic power.
