Die Ausstellung MINNEAPOLIS – BERLIN: common ground ist eine Kooperation von Studierenden des Department of Art der University of Minnesota (Leitung Prof. Jenny Schmid) und des Fachgebietes Malerei der weißensee kunsthochschule berlin (Leitung Prof. Pia Linz/ Petra Trenkel). Die vom DAAD geförderte Kooperation wird mit einer weiteren Ausstellung in Minneapolis fortgesetzt und mit einem Katalog dokumentiert werden. Mit ihr wird ein seit Jahren erfolgreich gepflegter Austausch zwischen den beiden Hochschulen fortgesetzt und gefestigt.
Auf beiden Seiten des Atlantiks sind jeweils annähernd gleich viele KünstlerInnen am Start und stellen sich die Frage, wie ein gemeinsames Ausstellungsprojekt aussehen könnte, wenn aufwendige Überseetransporte weder finanziell noch zeitlich realisierbar sind. Der Gegensatz von Nähe und Ferne wird dabei unter dem Blickwinkel der aktuellen technischen Möglichkeiten neu ausgelotet und zum verbindenden Thema der Ausstellung.
Es geht um Austausch und Verständigung zwischen den Kunst-Studierenden, die sich, aus ganz unterschiedlichen Lebensrealitäten kommend, sieben Stunden zueinander versetzt, virtuell miteinander vernetzen.
Das Ausstellungsprojekt hinterfragt konzeptionelle, ökonomische und technische Möglichkeiten, wie gemeinsam künstlerische Wirksamkeit entfaltet werden kann, an einem für die einen nah, die anderen fern liegenden Ort, dem „common ground“.

The exhibition MINNEAPOLIS – BERLIN: common ground is a collaboration between students from the Department of Art at the University of Minnesota (led by Prof. Jenny Schmid) and the Painting Department at weißensee kunsthochschule berlin (led by Prof. Pia Linz and Petra Trenkel). Funded by the DAAD, this collaboration will continue with a further exhibition in Minneapolis and will be documented in a catalog. It continues and strengthens an exchange between the two institutions that has been successfully maintained for years.
On both sides of the Atlantic, there are roughly equal numbers of artists who are asking themselves what a joint exhibition project might look like if costly overseas transport is neither financially nor logistically feasible. The contrast between proximity and distance is re-explored from the perspective of current technical possibilities and becomes the unifying theme of the exhibition.
It is about exchange and understanding among art students who, coming from very different life realities and separated by seven hours’ time difference, connect with one another virtually.
The exhibition project explores conceptual, economic, and technical possibilities for collectively achieving artistic impact in a place that is close to some and distant to others: the “common ground.”
