A Performative Wash. A performance by Florentina Holzinger at the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz

It is not only since the performance SEAWORLD VENICE at the Austrian Pavilion of the 2026 Biennale that Florentina Holzinger has been considered one of the most influential and radical voices in the contemporary European theater and performance scene. Her works systematically dismantle the boundaries between high culture, classical dance, circus arts, trash aesthetics, and extreme sports.

This week, Florentina Holzinger gave the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz an “autumn cleaning” with her naked performers. Towering above everything on the roof of the building was a monumental sculpture that recalled Gustave Courbet’s scandal-shrouded painting The Origin of the World. From there, the performers were lowered down the facade on ropes to scrub the building. Two of them inscribed posters flanking the front with the lettering Volks + Falls. Care work (cleaning, washing, nursing) is thus transformed into a demonstration of power that deconstructs patriarchal body images from a feminist perspective. At the end of the performance, three water fountains from the summer “Volksbad” — with which the new artistic director Matthias Lilienthal delighted the Berlin audience— were finally deployed.

With House Wash, Florentina Holzinger translates her characteristic visual language into a monumental, site-specific format that recalibrates the concept of the Volksbühne—an impulse that the audience could further explore during the building tour House of Hopes by Rimini Protokoll.
