Über Walden VI: Tremor

Walden ist ein Festival für Klang, Musik und Performance im Wald des Künstlerhofs Frohnau. Zwischen Bäumen, Lichtungen und den Spuren einer vielschichtigen Geschichte entstehen temporäre Situationen des Hörens, der Wahrnehmung und der Begegnung.
Die sechste Ausgabe des Festivals, die am Samstag, den 04.Juli 2026 von 14 Uhr bis 24 Uhr stattfinden wird, steht unter dem Titel Tremor. Ein besonderes Highlight ist die speziell für das Festival neu gebaute Waldbühne, die dieses Jahr als Hauptschauplatz fungiert.

Ein Tremor ist ein Zittern, ein kaum sichtbares Beben, ein Vibrieren im Gewebe, ein Schwanken im Gleichgewicht der Dinge. In der Musik wird dieses Zittern zur Schwingung, zum Puls, zur Frequenz. Auch unsere Gegenwart scheint von solchen Tremoren durchdrungen zu sein. Politische Gewissheiten lösen sich auf, Landschaften brennen, die öffentliche Sprache wird zugleich schrill und leer. Angesichts der Absurdität und oft alarmierenden Gedankenlosigkeit politischer Entscheidungen bleiben Künstler*innen häufig in einem Zustand des Zitterns zurück: zwischen Unglauben, Wut und einem diffusen Gefühl der Vorahnung. Doch Zittern ist nicht nur ein Zeichen von Schwäche. Ein Tremor setzt Dinge in Bewegung. Schwingungen wandern durch Körper, durch Luft, durch Holz und Erde. Sie verbinden Orte, Stimmen und Materialien.

Walden VI: Tremor möchte dieses Zittern hörbar machen. Künstler*innen aus den Bereichen Klangkunst, experimentelle Musik, Performance und Installation entwickeln Werke, die auf die spezifischen Bedingungen des Waldes reagieren. Der Wald wird sowohl zum Instrument als auch zur Bühne. Stimmen, Klänge, Resonanzen und Bewegungen entfalten sich zwischen den Bäumen und bilden ein Netzwerk aus Schwingungen.

Für uns ist Walden eine Praxis der sensiblen Wahrnehmung in der Natur: eine Art, Schwingungen und Klänge zu hören und zu spüren, sich auf die Rhythmen der Umgebung einzustimmen. Gleichzeitig bedeutet Walden, sich in diese Bewegungen einzuschreiben und auf sie zu reagieren. Das Programm führt von konzentrierten Hörsituationen bis zu tanzbaren Momenten, und auch für Kinder gibt es im Wald einiges zu entdecken.

Über Walden:

Seit 2021 ist Walden ein jährliches Treffen im und um den Berliner Künstlerhof Frohnau. Ein Festival für Klang, Musik und Performance, das viele anspricht: Berliner aller Altersgruppen und aus allen Stadtteilen sowie diejenigen, die an den Schnittstellen von Klang, Bewegung, Poesie und bildender Kunst arbeiten.

Jedes Jahr eröffnet Walden einen Raum, der in der Berliner Festivallandschaft selten zu finden ist: ein Zusammentreffen zeitgenössischer und interdisziplinärer Künste unter freiem Himmel. Künstler*innen nutzen den Wald als Bühne und Instrument und lassen Resonanzen aus Bäumen und Ruinen aus der vielschichtigen Vergangenheit dieses Grenzgebiets entstehen. Hier loten sie die sich verschiebenden Grenzen zwischen Natur und Kultur, Stadt und Peripherie, Erinnerung und Gegenwart aus. Die künstlerischen Beiträge werden von einem Kurator*innenteam ausgewählt und teilweise eigens für die Veranstaltung in den Residenzateliers und Werkstätten des Künstlerhofs Frohnau produziert. Das Festival legt Wert auf physische und emotionale Zugänglichkeit und wächst durch seine Verbindungen zur lokalen Gemeinschaft.

Der Künstlerhof Frohnau liegt am nördlichen Rand Berlins, wo die Stadt dem Wald weicht. Seit über 25 Jahren bieten diese verstreuten Gebäude Künstler*innen Schutz; seit über einem Jahrhundert ist das umliegende Land Zeuge derer, die durch die Geschichte vertrieben oder gebrochen wurden: Kriegsversehrte, Flüchtlinge, Psychiatriepatient*innen. Der Wald bewahrt noch immer ihre Spuren. Zwischen den Bäumen liegen Gedenkstätten, die markieren, wo Menschen beim Versuch, die ehemalige innerdeutsche Grenze zu überqueren, ihr Leben verloren haben.

About Walden VI: Tremor
Walden is a festival of sound, music, and performance held in the woods of the Künstlerhof Frohnau. Amidst trees, clearings, and the traces of a multifaceted history, temporary spaces for listening, perception, and encounter emerge.

The sixth edition of the festival, which will take place on Saturday, July 4th 2026, from 2 pm to midnight, is titled Tremor. A special highlight is the forest stage, newly built specifically for the festival, which will serve as the main venue this year.

A tremor is a quivering, a barely visible tremor, a vibration in the fabric, a wavering in the balance of things. In music, this quivering becomes a vibration, a pulse, a frequency. Our present, too, seems to be permeated by such tremors. Political certainties are dissolving, landscapes are burning, and public discourse is becoming both shrill and empty. In the face of the absurdity and often alarming thoughtlessness of political decisions, artists are frequently left in a state of trembling: between disbelief, anger, and a vague sense of foreboding. Yet trembling is not merely a sign of weakness. A tremor sets things in motion. Vibrations travel through bodies, through air, through wood and earth. They connect places, voices, and materials.

Walden VI: Tremor aims to make this trembling audible. Artists working in the fields of sound art, experimental music, performance, and installation are creating works that respond to the specific conditions of the forest. The forest becomes both an instrument and a stage. Voices, sounds, resonances, and movements unfold among the trees, forming a network of vibrations.

For us, Walden is a practice of sensitive perception in nature: a way to hear and feel vibrations and sounds, to attune oneself to the rhythms of the surroundings. At the same time, Walden means becoming part of these movements and responding to them. The program ranges from focused listening experiences to moments for dancing, and there is plenty for children to discover in the forest as well.

About Walden:
Since 2021, Walden has been an annual gathering held in and around the Berlin Künstlerhof Frohnau. It is a festival of sound, music, and performance that appeals to a wide audience: Berliners of all ages and from all neighborhoods, as well as those who work at the intersections of sound, movement, poetry, and the visual arts.

Every year, Walden opens up a space rarely found in Berlin’s festival landscape: an open-air gathering of contemporary and interdisciplinary arts. Artists use the forest as both stage and instrument, drawing out resonances from trees and ruins that reflect the multifaceted past of this border region. Here they explore the shifting boundaries between nature and culture, city and periphery, memory and the present. The artistic contributions are selected by a team of curators and, in some cases, produced specifically for the event in the residency studios and workshops of the Künstlerhof Frohnau. The festival emphasizes physical and emotional accessibility and thrives through its connections to the local community.

Künstlerhof Frohnau is located on the northern edge of Berlin, where the city gives way to the forest. For over 25 years, these scattered buildings have offered shelter to artists; for over a century, the surrounding land has borne witness to those driven from their homes or broken by history: war veterans, refugees, psychiatric patients. The forest still bears their traces. Among the trees lie memorials marking the spots where people lost their lives while attempting to cross the former inner-German border.
